Reading through the comments I can understand why an American might actually be less likely to know what is going on in their own country, it's partly size, very high homicide rates and other violent crime and what's news worthy. If it's not local news it's hard for most stories to reach even regional news like a statewide news bulletin because let's take Florida as an example, 2019 there were 1334 homicides which is 3.65 per day, in the whole of Australia with about 20% more population in 2020 there were 396 homicides. So just using this one statistic in the 22 minutes to 30 minutes news bulletin Florida can slot in a murder into every broadcast, then there's gun violence not causing death which can be another story etc. etc. but in Australia we can't find either of those events on a daily basis so it's quite conceivable that things that might even make the Australian news about an event in the US might not make even the state news in a large US state because there's a lot more "interesting" stories. Also violence is normal in the US having a homicide rate about 5 times that of the average wealthy country, not much can be shocking under such circumstances. The size of a state probably makes a big difference also, the 4 big US states have so much going on. If talking nationally in the US there were 21,570 murders and non negligent manslaughter in 2020. You could literally have a 24/7 murder channel and probably still couldn't cover every case in depth.
