The true vaccine hesitancy rate is low but apathy is somewhat high, pretend you are in Northern Queensland , maybe 3 community cases so far not connected to a family member of an imported case and closest death 600 miles away, how would you take it extra seriously it's not real to you so you will lack urgency and wait for Pfizer which is considered the best and in short supply. Even when that Pfizer vaccine is available you still won't rush but technically you are not vaccine hesitant.

No the number is 80% of eligible Australians and we still quite a long way off that.

You are missing something called human behaviour and being fussy, people in the UK for example would get the Astrazeneca knowing if you are young slightly higher risk than Pfizer, some young Aussies are getting Astrazeneca but many prefer to wait because no urgency and some older people want the Pfizer as well just for the extra couple of percent efficacy. When there are thousands of deaths around people are more urgent. As stated the other countries successful in containment also slow roll out. Pfizer is in limited supply and only a small amount of Moderna coming soon. I expect Australia will eventually get high vaccination rates but it will take some extra time because of the covid 0 issues making people especially in Western Australia and Queensland unless we have a major outbreak very complacent.

It's a minority but yeah a bit embarrassing.

I have a strong suspicion many of the protestors are on government handouts anyway.

It's all very easy in hindsight and what is wrong with the government following advice , 90% of the time the advice was great hence Australia's overall success?

They never had a monopoly, but they are a superpower in that regard.

@Sneedmire I am from Queensland but keep hearing of the interconnectivity between Bondi and the Western suburbs , parties and lots of travel between. Maybe some tract of land encompassing those areas would be suitable.

@nonsibi1087 Your last comment is interesting and also consistent with the 1918 flu pandemic, the states with greater restrictions recovered more quickly, the US and Australia for that matter haven't really started recovery yet because our governments just running giant deficits hiding the real picture.

It should be looked at in perspective, vaccination rates lower than Mississippi and Alabama and no natural infection immunity unlike Mississippi and Alabama, for NSW , VIC and NZ to open up would make those US states seem in a pretty good situation. In other words for now it's called no choice.

@mantis10_surf85 Wrong sunshine state.

@dorianshadesofgray that's because of lockdown, look at Mississippi and Alabama with much higher vaccination rates than anywhere in Australia and they have a lot of natural immunity on top of that. NSW and VIC would make Mississippi and Alabama look pretty good if the virus was let rip.
