It's pretty sad actually, the biggest supporters of the brutal Myanmar dictatorship are Trump supporters and Communist Party of China supporters, a very unfortunate moral alliance.

If your country failed or the population perceives it to have failed with the covid 19 response your popularity is down and conversely if you succeeded or people perceive the response to be a success you can't lose an election, it's impossible basically. I am in Australia so long as covid 19 is still a problem no state government or the federal government will change parties if an election is held. I am one of them , I am centre right but voted for the centre left incumbent party in my state election because of that reason towards the end of last year.

While it does seem unlikely the Israeli coalition can hold , stranger things have happened, I think a wait and see approach is best. Also what's to lose it can't make things worse I would think.

@jgroovy1973 Australia we say leftie and it's not particularly derogatory, it's more a statement of fact. Our political spectrum is quite different to the US though, both our main parties are more central than the US I believe, take trade for example, the US actually is far left and far right at the same time, that is protectionism, the center left and right should be arguing for freeing up trade in the US but seems that section of your politicians are sort of dead silent now. With Obama Biden administration quite an effort was made towards being in the TPP , now we have the CPTPP which is a scaled down version without the US obviously, so Biden seems to have moved from his previous position most likely for pragmatic reasons or populism because it wouldn't be popular now in the US.

I think you are touching upon voluntary voting with a low turnout because it changes the numbers significantly and I would argue the politics also, I am Australian so very high voter turnout and compulsory to turn up or you might get a small fine, there is no advantage to appealing to the far right or left elements because it could lose your party the election , people once they are at the ballot box usually cast a valid vote which considering the alternate party is still centre means might change vote, US they actually try to appeal to far left and right so those people turn up to vote and it doesn't cause the center left or right to change sides because the other party is trying to appeal to it's extreme also, this is why Q candidates are actually winning and looks like it isn't really losing Republicans many votes.

You are describing a Stopgap quick fix that solves virtually none of the US's underlying issues, for social welfare and equity the US is 40 years behind other wealthy nations at least and it's not about money, take healthcare the US spends more than most countries on publically funded healthcare however it doesn't seem entirely universal, if you are in a certain income bracket , that is medium low to medium it can bankrupt you if you get sick or injured and this is coming from comments I often see plus my basic knowledge on the subject. The US is the second best propaganda machine in history after the Communist Party of China. Both the US and China are great for billionaire, I pity the peasants in both countries.

@S J I am not American but I would say don't worry about the US becoming a dictatorship anytime soon, one thing that didn't fail was the public service didn't bend to Trump's wishes, technically declaring states of emergency etc. could have been done but it didn't happen, probably the generals said words to the effect that's an unlawful order Mr President so I don't need to comply. This will be discovered in 50 years I believe it is after documents become unclassified. As far as your point about guns an authoritarian regime doesn't need to take guns off people, in fact it's in their favour , it gives an excuse to execute people extrajudicially , if nobody has guns there's no excuse for killing people , you need to fill up prisons and to be honest they are already a significant burden on the state because they are overflowing at the moment.

Because they are often out of touch and have no idea what they are talking about, sort of like a king in a castle who thinks he knows how the peasants feel and what they want. The problem here is it's gone way beyond that to objecting to issues that are clear and should be non political like vaccines. Australia hasn't suffered this problem, our problem is a little different, success has reduced the desire to take vaccines because people see no point and the risk return individually is lower however I think vaccine hesitancy even under this different scenario is still less than the US, hard to know for sure because of our limited access to vaccines so far which is unlikely to change.
