Looking from Australia, the problem is you are a country divided who has no trust in your own governments regardless of leaning. You have segregationists both black and white who are prominent. A sizable proportion of your country doesn't even believe in a controlled US border but supports a controlled North/South Korean border control spearheaded by the US. Your homicide rate is more than double of any comparable country. Trump makes Obama seem like a fiscal conservative running up government debt like crazy to pay for tax cuts. Both political parties have made a point that protesting yourselves and spreading the virus is important. You have a low level civil war occurring with left and right extremists actually killing people and not being condemned by the side that extremists are on. Both parties extremely guilty of this under the circumstances. Cities in fire but "only a few blocks" is actually an argument I have seen, along with both sides protesting in paramilitary kit and killing people and government workers the police. If you saw 3 blocks of any large city in the world being taken over by a vigilante group and other vigilantes somewhere else supported by the opposing political party and supported by a political party you would think what's wrong with that country , wouldn't you? Government officials not condemning such behaviour is the same as support because they are deliberately subverting the rule of law for political gain.

"We are slowing the spread and opening up again" that's a great quote, he's a miracle worker. It's actually true in some states to be fair but it has nothing to do with the federal government that discourages mask use and encourages high risk behaviour like rallies.

@shawn_mf166 Why do you compare the US to countries with vast slums and no money. India has managed to slow it but it's impossible to stop it, Brazil like the US just let it rip. The China let it out is ridiculous , it's truly amazing that less than 1,000 cases ever got out of China if you exclude Taiwan. No country has ever been able to stop a respiratory virus from spreading to other countries in the history of mankind. Every country was aware it was outside China as of 15 January with a case detected in Thailand. As far as flights leaving China the US government wanted it's people home and the US government facilitated this, was China supposed to not let them leave? What was China to do? Maybe China believed the wealthy countries would be able to manage people entering their countries. From Australia one of the hardest hit countries with 15 cases on 20 February, can you remember what Trump said at the time as the US had also detected 15 cases. The initial failures are that of the federal government, Trump reduced the capacity of a pandemic response which was initiated by Bush and Obama carried it on reinforcing the need. Trump is the outlier, Bush or Obama would have done a better job.

@shawn_mf166 I haven't given my opinion on what the US should do now, only commented on the failures that created the situation. My opinion is you should follow Sweden nationwide plus masks because infection rates are so high however states that want greatee measures to still be allowed to do so. Following Sweden would mean higher restrictions in some places. Best of luck.

@shawn_mf166 it's true many European countries are disaster zones also.

@subtle_duckness2623 fair enough, the cases in the following countries were greater than the US or any European countries as of 20 February, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia and China. Ok I didn't manage to get 5 with 20 cases or less per day unless you consider Taiwan a separate country to China so up to you if you delete post. You might notice a higher number of new cases in Australia and China however these are because of imported cases and China it's usually 0 for community transmission internally and Australia it's a mix but the internal transmission cases are less than 20.

@ianrichie7746 there are actually many island nation's that have no cases but fairly small populations. You could go to Thailand they are opening up for tourists but I have seen the quarantine system and it looks like they might get some outbreaks because too relaxed , which of course can change the rules.

@subtle_duckness2623 if you search covid 19 time lapse you will have some videos come up and one of them I found shows a graph with case numbers by country.
