Well the US is the only country outside of China self contained enough that if it had gone down the elimination strategy for covid 19 the economy would now be positive year on year everything else being equal noting the US government debt binge under Trump was starting to bite in February when the US economy started to decline prior to the pandemic. However if the virus was eliminated he would have won in a landslide. No Australian government federal or state will change party while this virus is out there because people including myself prefer not to risk changing success. I voted for the first time in my state election for a party I wouldn't normally vote for.

@lynnsmith4 Are China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand not countries? They all eliminated it and include China plus Taiwan as 1 country if you want. The issue is it keeps re entering those above countries through quarantine breaches. You are incorrect to say no country eliminated it. The US in the scale of things did virtually nothing , no lockdown and no quarantine in any meaningful way, allowed the virus to spread to all 50 states and 2 major territories. As far as that booming economy it was made from an approximately 5% GDP rise in government debt per annum , so like someone with a house getting a mortgage and buying a Ferrari or something, unsustainable. 2008 had just as much a booming economy for similar reasons and we know what happened then.

@lynnsmith4 What is my lie? As far as Americans starving you are richer than Australians on paper why would you starve? You do however seem to agree no meaningful quarantine, to this day quarantine of international travellers going into the United States is voluntary, check the CDC website for yourself. New York effectively has voluntary quarantine even, no officials are going to check at night time. By definition you aren't locked down with complete freedom of travel so those with means like the governor of California just go to another county where business is open. This is the US automatic spread mechanism built into the response. If your state or county shuts it's businesses just go elsewhere to less infected areas to spread the virus.

@lynnsmith4 Partial lockdown with no quarantine I would argue is a killer, if the trend continued from the January 26 to October 3 excess deaths as reported by the CDC being 300,000 with only 200,000 being associated with covid 19 then the death toll now would be over 600,000 due to covid 19 and lockdown lite.

@lynnsmith4 of course can't shut down everything but you would agree that restriction of foreign citizens from certain countries while allowing US citizens to return with voluntary quarantine which has been relaxed from 14 days voluntary quarantine to 10 days voluntary quarantine has achieved nothing other than very short delays possibly of every strain on the planet. The virus doesn't care about citizenship but it does care if the carrier is quarantined in a hotel with no chance to infect others. The west Pacific countries have low infection rates and in some cases elimination due to policy , nothing else. There is nothing magic in the water in this part of the pacific.
