@Braddeman You have to understand all the prosecutions are from the 1970s and 1980s, well before encrypted digital comms were a thing. The police used FM, and they didn't like criminals listening in and anticipating their moves. The move to digital for the police put and end to all that. Note that all this happened way way before web SDRs came to be a thing.

Where did you leave the USA for?

@RCAvhstape Pretty much the same in the UK. If you did it within the confines of your house then you were fine. If you were the lookout for the robbers listening on a scanner then you were prosecuted.

@ My reply's disappeared! I said that's essentially what happens in the UK. If you're sitting listening in your living room, all well and good. If you're the lookout for a robbery with scanner in hand, you got prosecuted.

I'm pretty sure if you were transmitting illegally in the US, they'd seize your equipment and fine you. In fact, someone did get fined recently $15,000. They don't mess around with £250 fines in the USA.

Did you watch the video? This was about transmissions causing interference, not about receiving anything.
