There is a little know reason why pirates & captains of ships wore a patch over their eye (they didn’t all lose an eye) when they went below deck where there was no light & a crew that might want to attack them, it was imperative they could see immediately so by keeping a patch over one eye when they went below deck they could flick the patch up thus giving them immediate vision because the pupil would already dilated.
