@rikralph The US intent for Afghanistan was to take out Al Qaeda, which is why in 2010, after Al Qaeda got curb stomped, the US pulls 90% of the 100k troops deployed in Afghanistan. By 2014 there were around 10k troops left, the same year, the US hands all combat responsibilities to the Afghan government. Not to mention the US couldn't do the same thing in Afghanistan as to Iraq, as after US troops left Iraq in 2011, a huge spike in insurgents and civilian deaths occurred when the US left for 3 years, it only curved when US troops redeployed in 2014. Which basically made the US having to leave some security forces in the country, currently as of 2022, the US has 3k security troops in Iraq.
