  1. The harbour fortifications that were built at the mouth of St. John's Newfoundland are pretty spectacular. You can't see them from the land and as you suddenly enter that well protected harbour from the sea they are suddenly THERE. The concrete bunkers built onto the cliff face positively bristle with gun ports pointing in all directions. They were never challenged, although if they had been, the harbour mouth is narrow enough that a partly sunken wreck or two might have shut that very important port down during the all important Battle of the Atlantic era.
