" ... ship paint schemes and appearances through time? " In modern navies, generally the further North (or closer to the Poles) that a navy operates, the lighter the paint scheme. In the 1950s for example, The Royal Canadian Navy applied some science to their paint scheme and came up with a distinct warm-tone, greenish grey called "ship-side grey" that literally vanishes into a North Atlantic (and North Pacific ) fog. It is so effective that it is still in use today 65 years later. The Royal Navy adopted something similar but a bit darker in recent years. The US Navy ships are considerably darker reflecting the more southerly environments in which they mostly operate (and a certain amount of old navy conservatism).
