Crimea controls the Back Sea and if Ukraine can take it back and hold it, the occupied territories around the Sea of Azov become orphans that may not be viable over time.

They may be lazy enough to think that they're also for infantry. We're not seeing much exceptional field craft from the Russian forces. Why didn't they learn the lessons from WWI trench warfare? The Russians got creamed while fighting in WWI trench warfare. As a matter of fact, their army (the biggest one in Europe that was mobilized) utterly collapsed, mutinied and sued for peace. "Trench experts" ... unh-hunh.

Not everybody in the American body politic is your friend, Ukraine. The pro-Russian Trumpist Congress people might have access to all those documents via various committees and I'd be wary of sharing too much with a US that may be as much as 1/3rd pro-Putin. At the beginning of WWII, the Americans were often pro-Nazi Germany and things haven't really changed there much.

@SoloRenegade Those Russian "defences" are theatre props for the benefit of the peasants back in Mother Russia. They're little better than a papier mache Hollywood set.

I retired from the Canadian navy just at the end of the Age of Sail but I hear ya, Brother!

You'd rather see a genocidal end to this I take it?

The US, British and Canadian armies all breached that line in various places in a few days. It's like a lock in a door ... a determined thief will get past anything.

@AgnieszkaNishka They are producing what ... a dozen hypersonic missiles a month? (... depends on how many microwave ovens the glorious Russian infantry can loot for their control chips). Yeah. Lots of hype in hypersonic. You'll see one or two here and there ... maybe ... once in a while.

That old Ukraian guy with the John Deere tractor that grabs abandoned Russian tanks 'll make short work of those little things. The Russians ain't too bright, it would seem.

Nobody brings up that Ukraine using a dirty bomb in Ukrainian territory makes absolutely no sense at all. Why would any Ukrainians poison their own soil, aquifers, airspace with radioactive isotopes that last a long, long time? It simply makes no sense. The Russians, on the other hand are freely destroying everything that stands in Ukraine and have shown zero regard for human life, there. The idea is ridiculous that Ukraine would set one off. Why do people keep mentioning it as a possibility when it is patently cuckoo?

@tomhenry897 It's going to be very hard and take many years to take back all of Ukraine.
1
@amc3463 They can't legally do that.
1
An Orlan drone that is calling down artillery on say, your missile launcher is worth a lot more than $10,000 Dollar-for-dollar comparisons don't make much sense when you are defending.

They fell victim to believing their own propaganda that told them they were so good that they didn't have to do much more than show up.

@timpost2981 Well, Michael Lee thinks it's all some military industrial complex conspiracy but the stated goal of the Russian Federation is to end Ukraine and her people by whatever means. I guess Mr.Lee prefers the "whatever means".
1
@michaellee4694 They are not going to do that, Michael. They didn't when the Soviet Union broke down and this invasion dates back to 2014. Thee war has been continuous since them. It was dramatically escalated by Russia one year ago. Russia is not going to "just leave" although it would end the war in one day if they did. Putin's existence is at stake.

@tomhenry897 If you stop and Russia succeeds, you'll be spending ten times as much for ten times as long. Americans can't bury their heads in the sand no matter how hard they try.

Ahhh, there is another master plan in the works: "You will advance, always advance and never retreat to the last man." That's it. That's Russian 21st century tactical doctrine. Reminds one of WWI, doesn't it?
1
Those look pretty easy to move with their big steel lift rings sticking out of them. This winter is going to see several siege situations going on with trapped pockets of Russians unable to get out or get supplies (They are just escaping one now in Kherson.). Wouldn't it be fun if the Ukranians scooped them up and deployed them to help contain Russian forces in various kettles and encirclements? "Karma teeth"
