@polarexperts5073 They started mapping our portion of the Arctic in Canada during Tudor times of Elizabeth the 1st ...Humphrey Gilbert 1560s, Martin Frobisher 1576, William Baffin 1612, Henry Hudson 1610 ... generations before Peter 1st was born. The Hudson's Bay Company had established a network of trading posts all across thee Canadian Arctic long before the Russians turned up.

Exploiting the oil in the high Arctic is difficult, dangerous and it will be VERY expensive. They are doing it at a time when the whole planet is racing to get off oil. By the time the Russian economy has recovered enough that they can take on exploiting the most expensive petroleum on the planet, there will be no demand for it (There is already lots of oil all over.) The Russians will never get it or sell it. It's a "yesterday" product.
