I was in the same navy during the Cold War and the rule of thumb in the North Atlantic is that once you go over the side and are immersed, you have 4 (four) minutes before you become unconscious from Hypothermia. Death follows soon after. These days there are floater suits and exposure suits to extend that somewhat but they simply didn't exist during WWII. Escorts were not allowed to stop because it was too dangerous to risk them as well and in the Norwegian Sea, it as futile as four minute isn't enough time anyway. Later in the war, rescue vessels were added to convoys but in near 0°C waters, few survive. They say that it's a gentle death freezing unconscious before you drown.

The Israelis have hitherto been onlookers in this conflict and pretty lightly engaged. Nukes to Iran engages them immediately, likely ending with direct attacks on Iran to destroy her nukes. (could that go nuclear?). Anyway, it brings a powerful ally into the Western alliance. Putin is spectacularly good are bringing allies together like that.

@ettoreatalan8303 It's looking as if the better, smarter part of the Soviet Union wasn't the Russian part (a lot of their arms, big and small came from Ukraine, for example). They won't be able to replace this old Soviet arsenal they are using up now as they don't appear to have the industrial expertise to do it (The Lada is the best car they can produce? ... a 1970s vintage Fiat 124 knock-off?)

@davidford3115 They interviewed those who died when the Titanic sunk extensively and .... nothing!

The first four Canadian Leopards were flown into Poland a couple of weeks ago along with 25 Canadian Army trainers so presumably they've set up a Leopard 2 training operation there for Ukrainian troops. Canada has just pledged four more and maybe with a little prompting and prodding they can get even more of them prepared for combat.

@Ass_of_Amalek I doubt that the Israelis will take that chance. Expect a ferocious response from the Israelis just like every other response from the Israelis has been since 1948.

@davidford3115 You apparently didn't read my comment in the first place. I was talking about your 4 minutes of swimming time before you pass out due to hypothermia (your body redirects blood flow away from their brain where 80% of it is under normal circumstances) to protect your core. Then you drown but you are already unconscious and are not aware you're drowning. Inflatables, collapsibles are irrelevant to this. A lucky few on thee Murmansk Run may have ended up in a Carly Float IF conditions were just right for them to get free of a sinking ship. Corvettes were known to go down completely in less than a minute. Merchantmen did not have Carly Floats. 22 man auto inflating life rafts were two decades in the future. Collapsible B is a WHATABOUT, WHATABOUT thing. It' is classic internet substitution of apples and orangutans. Read material more closely before you blindly and insultingly WHATABOUT another's comments. BTW, tell us about YOUR naval service on the North Atlantic. I've sailed in waters that are literally one degree above freezing. Those icebergs are gorgeous,.

Young Donald What never happened? You're as delusional as Old Donald. You know, we had a family friend (passed away now) who served on the Canadian corvette HMCS Wetaskiwin and the destroyer HMCS Sioux escorting convoys full of supplies and armaments to Murmansk. He was awarded a medal for his service by the Soviet Union in the late 1980s.

@kyoai What allies? Everybody hates Russia. The Chinese are doing the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" thing but actually, China is a far bigger existential threat to Russia than the Western countries are. India? Their relationship with Russia is purely a business one and not ideological. Iran? Maybe but what an opportunity for the Sunni powers in the Middle East. North Korea? Yeah, they're bigly. There is no World war here as the World will not be spit up in any way. Russia and mighty Belarus hardly add up to an "Axis".

That number "600" that the Russian propaganda machine used may indicate the true number of Russian soldiers killed in the HIMARS attack on New Years Eve. They have a habit of telegraphing information like that.
3
Poland forced the issue while Germany dithered like Hamlet.
3
The Canadians switched them out to the Leopard 2 when they went into Afghanistan because the Leopard 1s weren't air conditioned which is literally deadly dangerous in a hot/cold place like Afghanistan.

Apparently Ukraine has imposed a news blackout about the Kherson encirclement. The Ukrainians are now known for their feints. Expect the surprise advance to be south of Zaporizhzhia.
2
The Russian army is marching in the footsteps of Napoleon's Grand Armee and Hitler's Wehrmacht. Oh, the irony. Karma de bitch, mon.
2
@RadekSuski The Poles are practical and straightforward. The Germans can't say that "black is black" Black is darker than grey in Germany.
2
Unfortunately, the ammunition that Ukraine desperately needs is not the ammunition that the NATO countries manufacture, for the most part. Unless the West reverse engineers and manufactures Soviet calibre shells, Ukraine will have to look elsewhere in the World for their stocks. How about it, India?

Yeah. Your Orange God King is still cheering for Putin. Maybe, we'll get to see the "pee-pee" video soon!
1
@davidford3115 "nothing? You mean like your pointless response?" No, that was the response of the dead that they fished out of the water from Titanic and buried in Halifax. (English is your second language, perhaps?) How did the exposed survivors in rafts know what it's like to drown while unconscious? Try to piece this one together. Seriously!
1
@onerva0001 I have been immersed in VERY cold water for a brief period and it is extremely painful ... shocking enough to cause cardiac arrest. However, we are talking about people jumping clear of a sinking ship. They will experience extreme pain but after around four minutes of immersion, they won't feel much or anything at all. The pain doesn't last. You go numb, then unconscious, then you drown..
1
@moonbind Hopefully not but it is part of the contract that you enter in to.

@Leo_Pard_A4 Yes, yes! Socks are decadent and Bourgeois!

When the oil stops flowing in the pipelines, they also become prime targets for Ukranian long range drone attaacks. How about a spectacular Ukraine attack on Russian infrastructure by hitting few pipelines near a city like, say ... Moscow to shake the Russian people out off their complacency
1
@scratchy996 Canada went from the Centurion to the Leopard 1 in the early 1970s and then to the Leopard 2 during the Afghan war. It's been a long time since Canada used an American tank ... WWII to be precise when they had and made Shermans by the thousands, Even then,, the British and Canadians developed the "Firefly" version of the Sherman that the Americans never used with a bigger gun that could hunt Tigers. Canada did develop their own tank during WWII, the Ram but it was a bit small to be up-gunned for the threats of the day. They were converted into jim-dandy armoured personnel carriers though that were really prototypes for the idea of the later APCs that the Americans produced.

@Ass_of_Amalek Bomb the living shit out of every Iranian military facility that they can. It could easily go nuclear. An Israeli population whose grandparents were all lost in the Holocaust will attack ferociously. Iran will be in a total war and Russia will be seen as the monsters that they are yet again.
1
@Ass_of_Amalek The Israelis can intercept them all along their route. The Saudis will even re-fuel them (maybe even join the Israelis ) as the idea of an Iranian Shiite nuclear weapon is as abhorrent to the Arabs as it is to the Israelis. It will be a total disaster for Iran and the whole Middle East. Stupid, stupid idea, Vladimir.
1
@yespeace2000 Yeah yah. The Russians do something stupid again and blame others for the consequences. The Israelis will view Russia giving Iran nuclear weapons ready-to-go as a nuclear attack and very likely will respond in kind. The ecological consequences will not be on anyone's mids and they ill be 100% the fault of the Russians anyway as is this entire conflict.Try to think it through.
1
@antoniograncino3506 That is 100% based on whether the Russians attack any NATO territory. Is Russia that stupid? The Russians clearly aren't that smart.
1
@ettoreatalan8303 The hapless Moskva and that ridiculous "carrier" of theirs were both built in Ukraine as well as those awesome Antonovs.
1
@_Epsilon_ I doubt that. One take away from this war is that the "smart" part of the Soviet Union wasn't the Russian part. There is no possible way of getting the smart parts back, now that places like the Baltic countries are a part of NATO and so eventually will the Ukraine join it too .... they need to be protected from the Russian caveman. Russia is painfully backwards with no hope of improvement.
1
Canada has said they're going to train Ukraina pilots too but Canada doesn't fly F-16s either.
1
According to some recent archaeological forensics, a large number of the Grand Armeé had Syphilis when they froze like cordwood in their Mediterranean battle dress
1
@kirkwootton1887 So, the cold wasn't a factor, then? Really?
1
"“War is where the young and stupid are tricked by the old and bitter into killing each other.” Niko Bellic" Unfortunately, we are compelled to react to the old and bitter when they threaten our very existence, rape our daughters, shoot our grandparents for fun and impose their sick "truths" on the surviving population. I wish that I could agree with you but alas, we must defend ourselves from bloody men.

Why are the Abrams the most capable tank in the World? Is that because they're Made in America or are they really the best?
