" Whats the difference between naval and merchant spec construction? " Modern warships incorporate the so called "gas tight citadel" in which the atmosphere and environment within a substantial portion of the ship can be sealed off and controlled for nuclear, chemical and biological defence. You wouldn't bother incorporating such a feature in a commercial vessel. Maybe, cruise ships have climate controlled areas but they are nothing like the sealed and filtered atmosphere in a gas tight citadel.

I can see why the Russians erased that memorial and probably all memory of Tannenberg within Russia. The Russian army was anihilated in days. Life was cheap back then, too.

Interesting stuff. I'm fascinated by how DNA and Isotopic analysis is opening up how and when our species populated this planet. As for the "why" part ... I have direct "Bell Beaker" DNA on both Y Chromosomal and Mitochondrial haplogroups, myself. When they found AVA in her cist burial up in Caithness, they published a reconstruction of her features and I immediately said that she looks just like one of my nieces and I'll bet that we're related. They got all the colouration wrong the first time and now she looks like another one of my nieces. The hair went up on the back of my neck when I found out that we both have the same Mitochondrial DNA and she is, in fact of my family.I suppose that we all are but that is a whole lot closer than the Savanna of Africa. My Y Chromosomes puts me in with the Uí Néill of the Nine Hostages happy family.

Fortunately, this was a Slava class and not a Kirov class with their nuclear power plants. How do you clean up after one of those? No nuclear powered vessel has ever been sunk in battle, before.

Oops! 8:55 is a picture of HMCS St. Laurent (2nd) that I served on) Built during the Cold War and modified to carry a Sea King helicopter (version shown in this video) It is sailing along about 30 years after the Flower Class Corvettes went to the Breakers. The next shot is of a whole squadron of Canadian DDEs, DDHs from the 1960s-70s-80s. Note the rounded topsides for shedding radioactive fallout. Not Corvettes. .... need to do homework .... Canadian, tho ...
