  1. to be technical, it predates the current US which was founded on 1788 with the ratification of the constitution replacing the articles of confederation, but in practice we just celebrate the 1776 declaration of independence instead kind of like how we rarely lump in the presidents from before the creation of the constitution even though they had the title of president of the united states
