  1. yes, but it'll be dangerous, more so than any spacecraft we've created before. the better performance we obtain, the more power the reactor is required to make, thus increasing the chance for any critical failure

  2. the big difference between the 1960s NERVA and today is that they didn't have the option of nuclear electric engines, they had to use nuclear thermal, and the issues with fuel storage and radiation are both maybe unsolvable
