its because they weren't trying to make real things look real, they were going with alien bug things and kept them barely in focus. the CGI holds up so well because it was done properly, sadly the next decade of cinema would be endless overuse of CGI effects, but we're finally pushing past that today

the asteroid absolutely had to be a false flag, the movie very quickly handwaves the ability for a rock to be flung across the entire galaxy in a matter of hours when the earth has a massive asteroid defense system as well.
