  1. either get a dial indicator or profilometer if you intend to take this further, both will help identify if your surface is actually smooth

  2. i used to lap with Isopropyl alcohol, similar properties but wd40 is probably not great for computer parts. also a profilometer and a surface plate are going to work better than a mic, though its gonna be hard to make sure the card is flat to begin with

  3. the thing is the manufacturers do lap their dies, its part of the silicon process, just not after they've been mounted to a card
