Ya in the case of something like an airplane that if improperly serviced will almost certainly result in a fatality then it makes sense to require certified technicians, but in the case of boats, your average boat owner isn't going to be able to cause a fatality from having their engine die while on the water.

our boat was literally just a chevy smallblock, every sort of reasonable sized boat has a blower fan you're supposed to run for a period of time before starting a boat up for the first time

@burnedatbirth a lot of these boats are built with old carb auto engines, they are dead simple but you have to run a bilge blower or open the engine hatch and vent it before starting to clear the vapors that leak out of the carbs

what a weird take that conflates certification with qualification. I'm qualified by my workplace to calibrate certain machines but could calibrate other machines that we use outside services for because I'm not qualified to provide certification to that calibration for the purpose of production testing. same goes with certified mechanics, you're not paying for the mechanic necessarily, you're paying for the certification that its been done to a standard.

the starter bit is a nonstarter, you're supposed to vent the engine compartment for like 20 minutes before starting a boat for this exact reason
