  6. too much displaced volume, the issue is every baffle or sponge you put in your tank replaces what would normally be fuel, so you want as little mass and volume of material as possible for the job

  9.  @eekee6034  go read some of the speeds they used to run passenger rail back in the 1920s, they were possibly hitting speeds of 140 mph on sections of track but nobody bothered putting speedometers on trains back then anyways so the record for fastest steam engine probably isn't the actual record

I remember reading an article at my last job when we got these aerospace journals, there was a company claiming they could avoid the bit flip problem by using just many more error correcting elements by using newer, but not radiation hardened equipment since they'd get a big processing, speed, and power boost while being able to package like 5x the hardware in the same space. Basically trying to correct the errors faster than they occur

  30.  @MrHuram-abi  eh its not like nuclear regulations sprung out of nothing, its that most of our nuclear technology was a side quest, a byproduct of nuclear weapons production. there's some truely horrible piles of nuclear waste left over from the bomb program

It did come to me the other day reading an article about this launch just how wildly optimistic people were (and maybe cynically so) that taking parts from shuttle would just work tossing them into a completely different vehicle. There's almost no pieces on this that weren't re-engineered or built from scratch for this rocket. this wasn't 'bash a rocket together from spares' this was a brand new rocket with some off the shelf hardware and because its disposable the rs-25 engines which are all relics in their own right, are all gonna be trashed

  46. as much as I dislike the guy, spacex the company never shies away from heavy equipment and seems to pay off, though they might be putting too many eggs in one basket if their launch tower also stacks their rockets and also catches their rocket and also has a not insignificant chance of getting blown up and has a lot of very expensive components in it on raptor, I absolutely never understand why space-x is the only company that really understands the engine makes the rocket
