  6. i remember an old teacher whining about how she can't use a modern furnace without power (they used to have these things called greenwitch switches which bypassed the safeties) but then she didn't seem to care that that electrical power keeps her furnace from blowing up, melting, or do a dozen other not-good-for-her things

Splitting hairs, you're going to have different rates of flashing on different cars just from the difference in resistance from the length of wires from the front to back, even on the same car the wiring harness is going to be slightly different between vehicles. You'd have to add some kind of closed loop system

  12. the only issue I've ever had with LED lights was at an intersection where at the right time of lighting, because of their new improved brightness, the green on one signal illuminates the green light on another signal. this intersection was originally built without hoods on the lights though, and I noticed after a string of accidents in that one spot, they quietly added hoods to the lights, solving the problem

  13. My dad kept saying his 40 year old fire alarm was working fine because it was from before they had expiration dates, which while yes it didn't have an expiration date, also drove me to go buy 3 new detectors and replace everything because he wasn't going to.

  23. not sure if it was a thing but there's a bit in columbo where a projectionist says he stuck a nickel in the reel, and waited till the nickel pinged off the ground when the film reel ran low, telling him when to hit the second projector. I have no idea if this was a real thing or not but the writer made a point of adding it

  30. most of the spray cans aren't a refrigerant, they're diethylether, which is toxic to inhale btw, only the ones intended for running electronics seem to be alkyl halides like the one you had. We had both types where I worked, cans for the office and cans for the terminals running the presses

I actually had an apartment that was on two separate panels which was funny for when they needed to change an outlet out and uh...couldn't find the breaker on one side of the building

  48. TECs are good for direct cooling specific components, these fridges tend to be of the shoddiest construction with less insulation than a cardboard box. My dad had a refrigerated cooler for his car when he did large amounts of travel, it actually got cold because it was a cooler with a lid that had the cooling element in it

  55. seems like you could glue a neodymium magnet onto the side of it to catch the little slivers. as it is, all food products have an 'acceptable' amount of iron, just look at people confusing iron dust in their cereal for the iron content on the box. I've worked in food packaging and uh ya you're good on iron.

  57. you want to talk about light pillution, my college dorm had a soccer field in the middle of the campus, and they ran the field lights from twilight, to about 4 AM because they had a 3AM soccer league for some inexplicable reason it was like having a spotlight pointed directly into your window every night for 6 months straight.

  58. when I worked in a mill that had iffy wiring, every plug in the mill was a 240 plug and every 120v plug had to be adapted to plug in, then again at another job an older fellow there was running a space heater off a full 240v 30 amp circuit

I have a pair of them from my grandmother's old house. they weren't a conversion, they were from that 40s-50s era when those lamps were still in style but rapidly on decline

  74. I have a locking extension cord that uses these holes, I only use it for running an electric lawnmower so the cord doesn't become separated and melt the insulation while mowing, something that has happened before.

  79. we used to have these everywhere in our house, but ya these seem to come in and out of fashion kind of like the clapper. the ones we had were extensions you screwed into the socket and were vibration based, they just went bad eventually and they didn't work well with CFLs and LEDs. basically when the modules died we just never replaced them

  80. the problem with heat pumps is they're generally not great past 0 C or 32 F. one tech to supplement this is geothermal heating systems that provide the thermal energy to supplement that but those systems aren't practical in tight neighborhoods or suburbia so we're back to using furnaces or resistive heat but the tech for geothermal is getting smaller and geology requirements opening up so its possible

  81. talked with a hvac installer at a home show recently and they have installed dual fuel systems now here in the north east where there's 3-4 months where heat pumps alone just won't cut it, its just few people are buying them yet but they at least know about them and have familiarity with the systems. they even have the thermostat setup such that it can pick the cheapest system by programming in your energy costs

  87. I have a little Thermaltake USB fan that while was a bit expensive, has a little control nob and plugs into my keyboard and sits just behind it, it works wonders better than these things
