I´m from the Netherlands and I used to date someone from Russia and spent several summers there. What struck me personally the most was the lack of plumbing outside of the urban areas. Her parents built a toilet atop a hole in the ground. It was honestly depressing. I once gifted them a bedsheet from Ikea and they were supper happy with it. something people in the Netherlands can get easily, they were impressed by. Her mother was in her 60s on a pension and still had to work in the garden every day to get enough food. she had to work almost every day for a low salary on top of her pension and gardening. It was honestly super sad to see.
