  1. A question about banks and dealers. Why can't they take the book value and write off the loss portion? Isn't that a standard business practice? Reducing the tax load with an asset loss? Dealers are looking to sell, but banks are in a particular situation. Carry these non-producing assets on the books. If the policy of free were to leave and they had to pay, like you, that would be an incentive to make a move to take the book value. The commenter below makes the point about the banks, holding onto foreclosed housing too long and it caused them financial headaches.
