Your great granny was probably born at least a century after Sati was outlawed in 1828 after the rigorous efforts of Raja Rammohan Roy & Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. Even then she knew of a few incidents of Sati. Just imagine how prevalent it would be before it was outlawed. And even when it was not forced at the moment, the society always made a widow's life a living hell. Thus, practically Sati was always forced.

SATI APOLOGISTS HAVE FLOODED THE COMMENT SECTION. DEAR MORONS, NO MATTER SATI WAS AUTONOMOUS OR FORCED, NO MATTER AT WHAT TIME IT WAS PREVALENT OR AMONG WHICH CLASS, SATI WAS ALWAYS AN EVIL PRACTICE. YOU WON'T BECOME SMALLER BY ACCEPTING ITS EXISTENCE, YOU'LL BECOME SMALLER ONLY IF YOU ACT AS A SATI APOLOGIST.
