  3. I believe that was tried but the weight and expense was prohibitive. Another thing tried on smaller vessels was a sleeve of thick cordage to cushion the impact. Since most smaller ships, sloops and the like, would also be facing small ships then you are only talking about 4, 6, or 8 pounder guns.
