My mother made entire garments by hand. She would love your site were she still here.

Yes, the waist tape on pocket IS NECESSARY. I was listening to you whilest in process and envisioned this pocket replacing a ladies purse and it might contain weight which could make the tape help quite a lot. So fun to watch this process.

How do I do this at my age without projecting "Old Hag" ?

I am a historian and just love your sewing projects. My mother used to make her own clothes and often created entire garments by hand. Her stitches were so tiny and patient. Your dress is beautiful. It helps that you are so very pretty and small. I can't wait to see it finished.

You could wear old style lab coats, etc. We have this one doctor at the Veteran's Administration. He is young and quite attractive and VERY German. He wears old style lab coats and I often think of him as coming from old time East Germany. Alas, this is not the case. But, he certainly looks the part. He is a very nice and caring doctor by the way.

WOW Bernadette! I think your artistry is so appealing that fans just enjoy the pictures for their own sake. The exquisite collection of beautiful period clothing is worth viewing in and of itself. Interesting project.

I have an acquaintance who has also mastered this ...."comfortable in her own style" thing by simply using color. She only wears purple. I never knew there were so many shades and combinations of purple, violet, plum, etc. But she is, as you say, altogether a bit intimidating, and NO ONE would ever, EVER say anything to her about her clothing.

I'm so sorry this happened. But hey, in a way, this is a compliment. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". Sue them for copyright infringement. They stole your image as well. Breathe Bernadette!

I enjoyed this episode so much. It is interesting to see Historical Interpretation becoming a more popular career. I have worked in this field most of my adult life, employed with the National Park Service in USA. I started as a young girl working in costume in the Civil War period. Later, as an interpreter of Natural history / Park Natiralist, quite different. I love it all and see this as a most effective way of teaching people of all ages to love history and our natural world. I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

This is very interesting, thank you. I'm so glad this craft is surviving.

I think I shall make this using recycled clothing...
1
I have wanted to make an 18th century shirt for some time. Thank you.
1
You are a VERY TALENTED artist, in many mediums.

I suppose isolation is unnatural to humans and therefore curiosity wins out, or loses as it were. Gawkers have always shown up when people are dieing.

Cotton & linen.

After watching your process, most other sewing done on other sites, just looks ...sloppy. You inspire me and this video is one of my favorites. Thank you Miss Banner.

I actually found an 18th century looking, cotton "top" in a regular JC Penneys at the mall many, years ago ...unbelievable I know. I wore it out. I need this shirt. Thank you. So excited.
1
I had a shirt like this when I was 16. I had purchased it. It was cotton. I want to sew this one. I love this shirt. Thank you.
1
I wonder, dear child, doth thy parents speak thusly?
1
The cape is exquisite, as are the shoes.
1
So sweet your creation.
1
I think most old time dressmakers had help doing the bodice. You doing this alone is very difficult. You are very brave and talented.
1
It is very beautiful and fun to see accurate details of period dressing. A corset does help keep the back straight, posture good. I agree with your ideas of why so much historical clothing survived. It is good that you have a positive view of how corsetry CAN be beneficial. I have mild scoliosis...I wish I had worn a brace. My posture is not good.

I have said this before, but if my mother were still among the living, she would watch your videos over and over and over. She would love your style, as do I. Thank you for sharing your life and passions. Blessed be wee witchy lady.
1

Bernadette, you are an exceptional artist. I love your sketches. This project should be very pretty. I too, have always wondered why summer frocks are made of plastic. Looking forward to your new dress...
1
You could put a ruffle on the red blazer sleeves. .
