What you say it's Putin's propaganda. He wants to have ties with germans but in reality it were slavic obodrites who rules Russ, there are many facts proving it. Vladimir has two typical slavic roots vlad and mir and waldemar doesn't have a sence in it. If it sounds similar it doesnt mean it is linked, for example wariag or varangian sounds as warrier in English but it sounds as cook in Russian. So basically the first rullers of Russ were cooks. Were famous Varangians good cooks? If not then they sure had nothing to do with Russ. Olga was a name adopted from germans as well as Igor. Baltic see was navigated not only scandinavians there were hundreds of different tribes, not only slavic and germans, look at the map: porusses, pomeranians, estes, finnes etc.

No wonder vikings didn't come to slavic lands, they mostly came to Britain and France.

I'd like to draw attention to the fact that there were no Russia, Ukraine and Belorus in the beginning it was Rus, a totally different polity which language doesn't even exist anymore. The history of Rus has an unpredictable BEGINNING.)

@an0nycat You know wikipedia is not very reliable source. It has many speculations and sometimes presents theories as established truth.
