  1. poverty and things like that is a very surface level explanation. the harsh and sad reality is that there's a 100 years long moral degradation and societal decay in ru. there is an idea that when people end up in a concentration (or "working") camp or in the GULAG the natural selection kicks in, and the problem is that the fittest to survive is a person willing to abandon morals, compassion and empathy. the worst kind of people survive often at the expense of the best ones who inevitably perish. they are willing to steal, lie, betray, snitch or even falsely accuse their comrades for the personal gain, no matter how trivial, making this behavior the norm in this quasi society over time. there're many books and movies or even anecdotal personal stories on this topic. now, imagine the whole country turned into gulag, which was (and in some sense is to this day) the case with the soviet union. there was a joke that half the country is imprisoned while the other half is guarding them. the truth is that joke is no joke. for decades people have been forced to be prisoners, snitches and guards to each other. here's another common saying from that era - every man is a wolf to another (dog-eat-dog type of sentiment). what we end up having is the society of repressed sociopaths. in the peace time they are kind of hidden, but when fasci-regime goes full steam they start to pop up, spewing their inhumane bs. if you watch some ru pow interviews which are in abundance on yt you'll be amazed at things they are willing to say outloud, not only the pows, but also their mothers or wives. basically these people have fell so low they can't even comprehend it.
