  1. great analysis. i personally kinda like that fred kagan's from isw explanation of being wrong for the right reasons - that russian forces even if massive were somewhat incompatible with winning. but i also think that your idea of misunderstanding rationality is a crucial addition to that line of thinking. the key factor is pu's being completely delusional if not nuts making the idea of very short very victorious easy peasy war good and hence the invasion inevitable.
