taking you out of the goal oriented mindset is about the game for sure, especially that monastery quest. it is so good at it that this is annoying. when you get there first the game kind of breaks your protective shell and forces you to drop your marker-to-marker, goal-to-goal and trigger-to-trigger mentality. to survive the quest you have to immerse yourself in this situation to a fault first and literally live through it. at the moment this quest is WTF, but retrospectively it is very special in a good way and one of its own kind.
