funnily enough when you pay with a usd card in europe sometimes they give you an option to pick the currency and pay without conversion on checkout. it least it used to be the case some time ago.

@ there're obvious considerations. buying local currency (in either country) you're paying fx spread anyway. if you're paying by card in local currency you're paying that same (or at least similar) spread + possible exchange fees to your bank. in my case it was that the payment processor/shop was willing to charge me in usd with no additional 20% markup or whatever, and in my bank this payment was free as long as it was in usd. what's actually much worse is in my experience european stores often refuse to accept card payments whatsoever under some arbitrary sum like 10e. i understand their sentiment, but in my country (which isn't the usa nor in eu) you can literally pay with a card everywhere, in fact it's more likely they won't take cash than the other way around.
