i'm still fence sitting, but the difference with previous win releases is that the problems seemed random and there was always a chance the next version with solve them somewhat. and indeed, i skipped vista for 7 and later skipped 8 for 10. now i don't really see how ms backtracks on all w11 bs in supposed w12 so waiting doesn't seem to be an option. and in fact i can't upgrade to w11 (i know about some hacks) on my current hardware and i'm not upgrading it for windows in 2025. so it's either holding on to w10 past eol or switching. and even though for now linux isn't worth the hassle, it may be the lesser evil in a year or two.

@jedipadawan7023 i'm using logitech mouse-like trackball and i can't configure it properly as easy as on windows. popular third party app doesn't detect all features of my specific device, so in order to do some basic configuration like remapping buttons i have to run several third party apps/scripts, detect some outputs in cli mode or whatever, write them down and then write and run some scripts using that data. and it's not even the same distro to distro, meaning if i reinstall distro i can't just copy and paste, i need to redo the whole spiel. i can do that, but that experience is by no means seamless or uncceptable. and this is actually the case for many peripherals and hardware options.

that's why i switched my mother's laptop to manjaro many years ago, but myself i'll be using w10 to the very last moment when there's only that door floating.

btw there's a small possibility valve will roll out some form of steambox and later when it's somewhat mainstream a desktop option. when gamers see their games work fine on steam hardware and os it'll be much easier to accept valve prebuilt desktop pc, especially if the value is there. i think valve actually can pull this off.
