  1. i know it is a bit irrelevant but srill worth mentioning for those anaware of soviet life reality. there is this common misconception and stalinists' myth that it were the people that written 4 mils of report on each other and hence the regime isn't the villain or at least not the only one. but the truth is most of these reports are written by low level authority thugs responsible for the actual policing. in true totalitarian regime kgb operatives fabricate cases to meet execution and gulag quotas given to them from above (stalin's handwritten decree to top up executions by 5000 is a literal thing). sure, some people ratted out their neighbors or coworkers often with false acusations but this isn't something police state really relies upon.
