I skimmed it; Gehlen's translators did a good job, it's well written but FHO doesn't have much of interest to the cold war. Definitely worth a read. I preferred "the service" ('im dienst') though i've since read that book gives Gehlen more credit than is his due.

@GunnyKeith No, he wasn't, but he also didn't think Germany could win given Hitlers choice to try to exterminate and enslave the Russians. This was a fine line he had to tread since Hitler didn't like being contradicted.

@GunnyKeith Gehlen didn't underestimate USSR strength, his estimates were accurate and so he was able to keep his head and his job after the war.

ok jokes aside, have you ever lived in a dictatorship or been the subject of discrimination backed up with the full power of (corrupt...) law? you know, where the jackboot of state power armed injustice has its fucking boot on your god damned throat? I have. Western liberal democracies are nothing NOTHING like 1984 or Brave New World. Sure you can find traits but only that. True dictatorships would never tolerate or even allow the production of such criticisms. Raspberry Reich is the closest to an accurate critique of western liberal democracies as soft fascism, but even that is not really too tenable.

@TheImperatorKnight yes of course everywhere is Derry now and the RUC and black and tans are on the loose again I swear don't get pulled over by the traffic police you might be disappeared that way I swear 1) a totalitarian state claims absolute power over all aspects of life, there is no separation of public from private, family life is thus also governed by the state in a totalitarian state. 2) an authoritarian state in contrast splits the public from the private and ensures or ignores private freedoms while claiming absolute power over all aspects of public life. You don't live in an authoritarian state, let alone a totalitarian one. Even Ulster during the troubles was only authoritarian, if even that. If you took a referendum an honest one, not one at gunpoint where every voter faces potential state or rebel intimidation it would have voted to stay in the UK. It's rough democracy, but democracy. And that's nothing like the present which is laughably distant from authoritarianism. Shit mate you can't even enforce a proper quarantine! In China they weld your house shut and if necessary there are plenty of AK47s to shut up complainers permanently but remarkably no press coverage of any of all that shooting which happened (we have footage of their kill commandos btw).
