Narrow front > broad front because of the principle of concentration of force to overwhelm the enemy with local absolute superiority. broad front ONLY makes sense if you are also scouring for the german nukes which they were.

Montys narrow front is better than Pattons because only 1 exposed flank, not two AND closer to air support. They should have done Monty's plan, and when they finally tried (Market Garden) well we all know how THAT went. They had a decisive moment ... and didn't decide.

Does TIK think the falaise pocket's success and failure was due solely to Montgomery? Falaise was a success, until they didn't close the bag. I thought it wasn't properly closed due to staff conflicts between the allies. and yeah, M. was an egotist and this sometimes worked to his great disadvantage. And sooo cautious (El Al)

@Edax_Royeaux yes, because a routing army is just an army which hasn't recovered yet and as we saw both at Market Garden and the Bulge the Germany army recovered from the Falaise pocket disaster (and quicker than the Western allies expected btw).
2
@Edax_Royeaux yes, but the failed to close the pocket at Falaise. If they couldn't even do that simple task against a basically disarmed enemy, why would they be able to do the more complex hot pursuit you imagine? I presume the failure at falaise was due to inter-army rivalries between UK and USA.

@TheImperatorKnight It was a question, not a leading or rhetorical question. I've no idea what your view about the failure at Falaise is, the nearly perfect in other word failed victory, where you destroy all their equipment but fail to capture or kill their men.

@TheImperatorKnight My own opinion is falaise failed to close due to inter-army rivalry. maybe it's otherwise. so i figured to ask. you don't need to be defensive.

@vorynrosethorn903 yes, being closer to the channel ports makes the advance somewhat easier. red ball express shows that being near channel ports wasn't Necessary but was desirable.

@TheImperatorKnight You're definitely underestimating OKW's available forces after Falaise.

Google: German Orders of Battle November 1944 WW2, Armed Forces, Armies, Axis / July 11, 2022 / 2 Comments / By Kretaner / 1944, germany, wehrmacht / 8 minutes of reading to find the OB for Nov. 1944. I'm still looking for Oct. I presume Goodwood is finished by Oct.

@TheImperatorKnight If Germany only had 10 divisions in the west after falaise lol then how did Market Garden fail? Simple. They had many more than just ten divisions. Less than 50 perhaps but certainly more than 20, certainly less than 100.

@Edax_Royeaux it is better to have fewer weaknesses. Two exposed flanks are at least twice as hard to defend as one, and being close to English air and naval support also makes a difference. Yes, patton was a bit further east, but only a bit, and had no flanking forces immediately available to augment his mailed fist. Montgomery did. I prefer Patton as a general but one must be objective and unbiased.
