All you have to do is compare Zhukov's brilliance at Khalkhin Gol with Vatutin Zhukov got promoted and not purged because of his brilliant performance at Khalkhin Gol. He's clearly a better tank general than Vatutin, one of histories best generals in fact.

@Centurion101B3C In Russian, everyone knows Zhukov was a brilliant tactician and strategist, and moreover was smart enough to stay the hell out of inner party intrigues. I'm somewhat surprised he's not so recognized in English. My best guess why is that the battle of Khalkhin Gol was downplayed prior to WW2 and even after WW2. Zhukov having no desire to get TOO popular X_X never had the desire or pressure to strut and prance, just the opposite! Soviet secrecy explains it, but the cold war ended about 30 years ago yet the conspiracy persists! A conspiracy of silence! Zhukov is unquestionably the USSR's best general. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't read enough, and there is plenty of information thereto even if most of it is in Russian. Seriously, study Zhukov!

@Centurion101B3C Sei bitte nicht so. Klingt nicht so gut aus. I did read your comment carefully. You lost me exactly here: "I wouldn't credit the Soviets for anything, but their rule of thumb in practical matters was something along the lines of: 'If he/she/it works, then don't change it and go with it.'" 1. USSR defeated NS Germany. Never underestimate an opponent. Credit them where it is due discredit them where that is due. It's basic honesty. A fucked up dysfunctional system defeated an even worse system. C'est la guerre. 2. USSR does in fact field innovate, but it doesn't necessarily get covered. Lots of hillbilly kitbash Soviet weapons in WW2, but they are not famous or standard. On the other hand, some things which "worked", namely Tukachevsky, were nonetheless shitcanned. A bunch of Polish officers who might have been rehabilitated inot a Soviet Polish liberation force in contrast got turned into lawn mulch. So... your understanding of the USSR is, sorry to say, inadequate. Zhukov was both a brilliant tactician AND a brilliant strategist and did just as well without Vatutin as with. Maybe the one who needs to read more and more carefully is... You?
