Legally speaking: it's not a crime, neither under national legislation, nor under international law. Their only chance was to declare themselves stateless, even then and especially back in 1946 there is just about no chance for them. I kinda dislike it when people with no training in law make statements about what is or is not lawful because LIKE HERE they often get it Wrong. Just because I don't like it does not mean it's illegal.

@dragosstanciu9866 Factually true but legally irrelevant. I'm not claiming what happened was good, but it wasn't illegal. Even today it would be really difficult to argue it was other than legal. By 1990 it was clear a person could unilaterally reject their own citizenship without agreement of their government: that was not always the case, certainly not before 1945 at earliest! Then, too, now that you have these stateless people where are they going to live hmm? International law disfavors statelessness, and rightly so, because apatride people 1) have no protecting State power 2) nor have they any right as a refugee to force any other state to let them reside on that state's territory. So once stateless their only rights are haha no rights :/ I am describing LAWS here not RIGHTS. Which is just one more example why people with zero legal training generally are incompetent to talk about law ...

@EarthForces Let's see: a bunch of soldiers, you know, killers. And some are almost certainly going to be spies, others are traitors, still others are mere thieves. And of course any government is going to be only too happy to take in that lot

@TheImperatorKnight Well, whichever low level diplomat wrongly claimed repatriating pows to their homeland was a violation of international law was full of shit. Did I mention? All those killers, some of whom are spies, are going to get sorted out by Stalin. Prediction: he will kill off some of the people who support him. Suppose though the USA or Britain or the Unicorn Fairyland took in all those USSR POWs. Is Stalin going to see this as part of "Operation Unthinkable"? Of course! Welcome to international relations. Fuckers get killed, the issue isn't if they get killed, but when by whom and for what reasons. People and in fact entire peoples get thrown under the bus on the regular. It's fine to decide you hate all state power in consequence, by all means join the Amish or maybe a hippie commune somewhere, but don't expect to ever hold let alone successfully oppose state power that way. It sure is a dirty game, huh!
