  9. 1.) Literally no. The Maidan Revolution was the Ukrainian people's reaction to their elected official cozying up to Russia after they elected him because they wanted to pivot westward. 2.) Maybe Russia should stop scaring the nations around it into joining a security alliance that is designed to protect them from ending up exactly like Ukraine. 3.) Ukraine should have joined NATO, because then they wouldn't have been invaded like they were. Also, the United States isn't (or wasn't?) trying to annex Mexican territory, so Mexico has no reason for joining a defensive alliance with Russia.

  10. That's the media cycle. Every week since day one, I've seen articles doomer-posting about how low Ukraine and Russia are running on ammo. These surface-level takes fail to understand the greater scope of the war. Russian logistics are struggling, as is their morale. However, they're adapting their infrastructure to improve production, and their insanely repressive laws make crushing dissents basically effortless. I'm interested to hear why you take a centrist stance. Obviously Russia bad, but why not support Ukraine? Do you just not know enough about the topic, or do you have solid reasons for your neutrality here?

  11.  @papalittle3691  The best cold weather fighters in the world are the Norwegians, Finns, and Swedes. Believe it or not, most Russians don't live in Siberia. Also, they literally did suffer in the winter. Their soldiers had rusty guns, their tanks got stuck, and clean socks were among the many supplies not being delivered to the front. The difference now isn't so much that Russia has improved, but moreso that Ukraine hasn't kept up with them. Not because it's Ukraine's fault, mind you, but because the Western news cycle has all but abandoned them, and so it's easier for politicians to ease off of sending aid (which needs to be sent btw).

  13. Ukraine's population decided in 2014 that they wanted to pivot westward. Ukraine is not Russian territory, and it hasn't been since they gained their independence over 30 years ago. Leave them alone.

While I believe that Ukraine should have been allowed to strike into Russia from the get-go, I understand the concerns our politicians had over the escalatory nature of American bombs falling on Russian factories.   19. I would like to remind you that it costs the United States $10 million dollars every year to maintain every single one of the ~5,000 nuclear warheads in its arsenal. Now think about Russia's economy in the 90s. Their nuclear arsenal pales in comparison to ours. We know it. Putin knows it. He will continue to shake his fist and angrily threaten nuclear war, but he will never go through with it. Don't allow yourself to be threatened by a foreign despot. We are so much stronger than him. 💪💪

  20. Russia tech kind of stalled out (as they did) in the 90s and 2000s. Granted, early 90s tech is still and upgrade from mid-60s tech, but it's still not anything that would pose a serious threat. Regardless of his visit, this authorization would have happened eventually.

Gains are gains, but Russia's are so inconsequential (especially in terms of the political and manpower damage they're taking as a result), it's hard for me to agree with the idea that "Russia is winning". Especially when we're in such a relative stalemate, it's hard to say "[this side] is winning!!", because that's not really how stalemate attritional wars work.

  23. Are you insane? When has the Russian federation ever respected the territorial sovereignty of Ukraine, let alone the deals he's given to other bordering nations (like Georgia or Chechnia)? Ending the war without security guarantees basically assures that more Ukrainian lives will be taken by the Russian war machine in the coming years.

  29. A warm-water port might be good for Putin, but who's to say he'll just stop there? His rhetoric demonizes the West almost as much as 1940s Germany demonized Russia. The 1940s mustache guy didn't stop in Czechoslovakia, so there's no reason to assume Putin would just stop in Ukraine.
