Ah yes. It would be weird if America was built around the idea that people could move from their country to this country to improve their standard of living. In this (extremely hypothetical) universe, one might imagine a large statue standing in or near one of our largest economic centers with an inscription like, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," or something written down on it somewhere. Suuuper weird though, thank god we don't live in that universe

housing crisis

@probablygeorge6489 Housing is stupid expensive because we aren't building new houses, and because wealthy landowners treat property like an investment, instead of treating it like a necessity. Immigrants aren't stealing your homes, newborn children and greedy billionaires are.
4
Ah yes. A completely innocuous comment with no hidden meaning or double entendre meant to reflect sentiments from a darker period in this country's history.
4
@Tati8796 You're a first-generation immigrant? If english isn't your first language, than I apologize for mis-understanding what you said. However: The idea of "unwanted people in the neighborhood" gives off a really bad vibe with the history our country has had, dividing neighborhoods up by race. I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt and say it wasn't your intention, but you really should be careful when talking about "keeping immigrants out of the neighborhood", cuz you could send the wrong message to the wrong people lol
4
Housing. Crisis. Literally build more houses. Like I'm not even kidding, it is genuinely that simple. Build more houses, stop treating shelter like an investment and start treating it like a human right, and then we will have more than enough room to house our workers as well as anyone else who comes here. Let me remind you, my fellow Americans, that immigrants are some of our hardest workers. You don't travel thousands of miles over dozens of borders if you're burdened by laziness.
4
@Tati8796 No yeah you can express your beliefs however you like. I just wanted to warn you that the wording you used will attract the very people who despise you xd
3
Why not both? Does there have to be a choice, or is this intuition misinformed by the idea that houses are commodities and not a necessity? You do realize we can just build more houses, right?
2
@bro...5849 That's such a non-response. "Oh you don't want immigrants to be mistreated by international standards for asylum seekers? You must obviously be able to personally afford more people in your household!!" Dude. We have taxes for a reason.
2
What victory are you talking about?? These are hard-working people who are looking for a better life in our country? Why not pay them in exchange for their labor? Why remove them from the country? Are you afraid that they'll somehow get a citizenship in the 12 months it takes for the elections to happen?
2
@t-bone9719 Yes comrade, tell the americans that they will have to give their lives to Joe Biden. That will surely win Putin the 2024 election!
2
@probablygeorge6489 The problem is that Americans often confuse latinos from various countries for "mexicans", so the word "mexican" can be easily used/interpreted as addressing all latinos. That said, a lot of the migrants come from countries other than Mexico, so I have no idea why you are taking this weird position defending people who "hate mexicans".
2
Hey OP, if you can't seem to find an (affordable) apartment, you should vote for someone who wants to fix the housing crisis by building more houses. Supply up, demand down, price down. It's that easy!
2
@Tati8796 I'm not telling you to avoid the subject matter, I'm trying to help your language skills so you don't upset someone accidentally or dog-whistle to white nationalists >.>
2
DonnellxxOkafor You don't see the obvious problem with saying "unwanted people in the neighborhood"? You need to learn more about the english language or american history, or both.
2
@dcg590 I, personally, cannot afford to house migrants. That doesn't excuse the RICHEST GOVERNMENT ON THE PLANET from not being able to house and treat asylum seekers according to international standards. If you are soooo upset about paying taxes, why don't you join the left in trying to get the top 10% to actually pay theirs, and maybe your taxes will actually go down!?!?!!!?!?!
2
@LilMissPatriot Have you thought for a moment that the news channels you consume will only show lonely men because they are trying to make you feel a certain way? And you act like you're paying for a family of 7, when really it's more like 60 cents out of every paycheck you get. 350 million people can do quite a bit when they actually pay their taxes. It gets even better though, because the more people we have working and contributing to our economy, the more money our government has available, which means you (THEORETICALLY) have to pay less taxes! Woo! Now all you have to do is join the left in making the top 10% pay their fair share, and you'll have even LESS taxes to worry about!
1
@stevepaul6955 Ah right. Better keep all those poor people out and only let the rich ones wealthy enough to afford the price of legal entry! We wouldn't want America to be an international bastion of wealth and well-being now, would we?
1
@johnfetter Liar how though?
1
@beekeeper8474 oh yeah it's so easy for someone living on a 3rd world wage to just come up with the requisite thousands needed to enter the country legally. Don't you think we should maybe change the way we treat migrants? Especially when we are the ones who destabilized the entire continent in the first place.
1
@dc741 I mean if you wanna sit and hide away in this Fox News echo-chamber and completely annihilate your critical thinking skills, be my guest bro. Go ahead and float meaningless shit talk my way because you know for a fact you have nothing better to say
1
@Rocky12323 So what, everyone before [insert date here] came legally, and everyone after illegally? You understand that the world is far more nuanced than that, right?
1
Patriotic? This is many things, but I don't think "patriotic" is one of them.
1
@JAB-bc9uv Well I mean "good" or "bad" would be a good place to start, but I don't see what's "patriotic" about kicking a bunch of homeless immigrants out of a shelter and onto the streets.
1
@melindaescamilla4128 how?
1
@numbersbubble Why the absolutism though? "Oh you don't think all of them are bad?? Then you MUST think all of them are good!! Make yourself vulnerable to bad actors and prepare to get OWNED, LIBERAL."
1
@lori64lg Y'know we have roughly the same amount of immigrants in the country right now as we did in 2018 during the border surge under Trump, right?
1
@phatplates What?
1
@gavincurtis nice bait
1
@phatplates It goes up and down as people come and go. Immigrants also die, y'know. Especially when they live in poor living conditions that make them susceptible to things like, oh I dunno, a global pandemic!
1
@phatplates Also not every immigrant is a deadbeat. What an incredible mindset to have.

@@Kingmaker117 i wish you used at least one of your braincells before posting twitter-tier boomer trash like that :3
1
@Tati8796 I believe they were talking about the legacy of that phrase. You can talk about the impact of race in current year all you want, but this country--for 100% certain--has had a nasty history of explicitly racially-motivated hatred and bad policing.
1
@AlfredGarcia-x4j And I guess those people represent all of the 100,000+ immigrants who have made their way to New York in the past year? Hmm... maybe TV mainstream news intentionally takes stuff out of context or picks edge cases to rile you up and keep you watching their dying medium? Or is the news only "mainstream media" when it disagrees with you?
1
@melindaescamilla4128 What freebies? A first-world country that isn't run by warlords? Better economic opportunities? A sense of security and purpose? They are free workers dude, and it's not even like they're coming from the middle east where cultural differences are a huge problem!
1
@WilliamDunn-u2q The whole point of America is for everyone to be equal and free. The whole point of a democracy is so that no single person becomes too powerful. A completely free market would allow corporations to monopolize (or oligopolize) and grow more powerful than any government. Oh wait, that's already happening. "Free Market" capitalism is GUARENTEED to lead to authoritarian oligarchy when nothing is off the table and growth is allowed to remain unlimited. (See 1990s "gangster capitalist" Russia)
1
@chalzen1012 Illegal immigrants come here without a visa because they literally cannot afford the THOUSANDS of dollars it costs to get in. To an American, thousands of dollars might seem like a hefty price. To someone from a 3rd world country making literal pennies a day, thousands of dollars is literally unattainable. How else do you expect them to find a better life?
