Propaganda, mostly, though the population and resources of Eastern European countries do have utility to Russia's government. Have you not been paying attention as of late? Russia has been waging an economic and cyber war on Europe for the past decade. It only went kinetic in 2022 when he tried to quickly capture Ukraine. He failed, and now he's fighting a drawn-out war.

@sniddee Again, this isn't purely about the resources in Ukraine. Putin wants to be remembered as the guy who put the soviet union back together. His rhetoric is openly hostile towards the West. A war with NATO would be very bad news for him, but Putin has more ways of waging war than ordering his little green men to go kill people who don't like Russia. (Cyber attacks, economic "warfare", disinformation and manipulating public opinion, etc.)

Fun little fact from my beloved hometown: Johnstown (about an hour and a half east of Pittsburgh) was on the no-no mustache man's top five list of cities to bomb if he ever got to America because of our status as one of America's largest steel producers at the time. It remained this way until economic troubles in the 70s forced the plants to close and the city to enter a recession it is still feeling today! The more you know :D

I feel like the false-flag idea is very in-character for Putin and his failing regime, and I honestly cannot think of a more-reasonable explanation for the sabotage.
