Yeah but like painballs still hurt lmao. Don't shoot kids with paintball guns for no reason š

In the dark, when a situation is moving fast, in a community that has had a history of armed gang violence, that decision isn't very easy to make. This is why toy guns have that bright orange cap around the tip of the barrel, and why I think these paintball guns should be clearly designed to not look like real guns (like the one that one dude was holding).

Nah, too impractical. All we need to do is strengthen background checks and mental health screenings before giving people access to firearms. Getting into a legal arms race with the guns industry has already proven frustrating, and it's really hard to draw a line between "lethal" and "non-lethal", because "non-lethal" options can still be lethal to people in bad health (say, taser vs 90 y/o grandma), which is why police use language like "less-than-lethal" to describe "non-lethal" options.

The news here isn't really painting (heh) this in a particularly bad light, and the Police Chief isn't wrong. In a community that has historically dealt with gang violence, the local police department is going to be on edge about armed people. If you carry around a paintball gun that looks like a real gun, you're putting yourself in a situation where a police officer might need to make--what they perceive as--a split-second life-or-death decision. This could easily be fixed by just requiring all paintball guns to have bright colors and designs that don't look like real guns, in the same way that toy guns are required to have that bright orange cap.

Ā @stateofhibernationĀ No yeah I 100% agree that paintball wars are better than gang wars, and I'm not saying they should stop it entirely. I just think (and I think the police chief was also expressing this) that paintball guns should NEVER look like real guns, ESPECIALLY when you are trying to use paintball wars to get away from gang wars. I'm not sure if the police chief was pushing back against the concept as a whole, or just expressing the desire to visually separate paintball guns from real ones, though.

The police chief is clearly concerned about everyone's safety. He doesn't want to put his officers in situations where they mistake a paintball gun for a real one (or worse, mistaking a real gun for a paintball gun).
