You can't hear it in this part, but in part 2 you actually have the mic from one of the other officers involved in the pursuit. They roll up on the guy and don't actually realize another car went down there until about 3 minutes after they have the guy in cuffs. Intense chase into on-coming traffic twice; you're zeroed in and tunnel-visioned on the guy you've been trying to stop, it's really easy to completely lose other factors of the situation. A very good learning opportunity to be sure, but we also have to remember just how clear hindsight makes the situation.

Jesus Christ thank you. I feel like the only one in this comment section who actually got anything productive out of this video, while everyone else is cheering about some guy dying in a 140mph crash. This Trooper is an impressive driver, but handled this chase unsafely. I just hope that the people who matter can learn from this.

There's no disguise, just a blessing. Bodycams make the police AND the public more accountable.

@lt4753 I would argue they need about the same oversight, because police are people. A few years ago I would've completely agreed with you, but bad cops are still definitely out there, and I know this because of body/dash camera footage that's been made available for everyone to see. People will do sneaky shit and lie, uniform or not. Bodycams keep everyone on camera and everyone accountable.

@bennybellum6037 Upsetting to hear, given the obvious benefits. Though, that would have been a premium opportunity to weed out some bad actors. If you are uncomfortable about being recorded and held accountable as a police officer, you probably aren't one of the good apples.

@hydrocarbon82 That would breach departmental policy. Now, there is certainly a conversation to be had about the "us vs them" attitude that some departments have when it comes to covering their buddies' asses. I've maintained that American policing suffers more from a chronic culture of corruption than it does any race-based problems.

@tylerchambers6246 Can't share links, but a quick search on YouTube will show you genuinely disturbing videos of actually corrupt police officers caught on their dashcams and bodycams. Not trying to go all ACAB on you, but pretending corrupt cops don't exist will not solve any problems.

@DerakosZrux Not saying it doesn't happen, but the inclusion of the word "escalatory" raises an eyebrow for me. Any examples so I can get a picture of what you're trying to say?
1
@eringallagher9381 Bad actors will always find positions of power so that they can abuse their power to abuse other people. That is unavoidable fact. My issue is really with his use of the word "often", because it sort of gives me "ACAB" vibes :/

@MrMackey9 The suspect here was almost certainly not a threat. Had they noticed that poor sedan that went over the hill, they probably would have had a lot more people on it a lot sooner.

I will never in my life be able to drive like that officer did. God damn

you do realize proselytizing is the number one reason why people think christians are obnoxious right?
1
It's a pretty easy situation to mix up. With the speed and low resolution of the bodycam, it's hard to see why the suspect was shot, until you slow it down for a frame-by-frame.
