@TheAmericanPrometheus I'd hardly say say European politics is "so far left." There is a scatter of Communists around and some leftist parties that get around 15% of the vote, but most 'left' parties are moderate centre-left ones who only wish to ameliorate the effects of capitalism rather than seriously challenge or overthrow it.

@alexlehrersh9951 You will have to prevent evidence of illegal voting. I have seen none. Clinton won the popular vote. The system is flawed as it did not reflect the will of the majority of voters, just like 1876, 1888 and 2000.

@TheAmericanPrometheus Two world wars showed us the importance of the state and what we can achieve when we work together. That's why we in the UK have a health system that covers everyone and is free at the point of use, unlike the apology for a system in the US.

Popular vote or electoral college vote winner. 2) After 2016 the Economist Intelligence Unit lowered the ranking of the US to 'flawed democracy' and its third ranking due to the fact the winner of the popular vote did not win the Presidential election. If the person who gets fewer votes wins, you cannot call that a democracy.

Firstly, I never claimed any of the things were exclusive to capitalism, just that they were things to consider. You chose to construct the straw man. But your inability to read is not all, geography fails you as well. Ukraine was not a colony of the USSR, it had been part of Imperial Russia for centuries, try looking at some maps some time. And your history is diabolical. You think East Germany was bad - look at conditions in C18/19 British mines and factories. There was no famine when the Soviets went into Afghanistan, and in fact they were invited in by the de facto government of the time. Yes, the Soviets did drain the Aral Sea. And do you know what, they knew that and decided it was better to do that so they could grow cotton to clothe their population. Now you can disagree with their choice, or means if achieving their objective, but under capitalism you have vast swathes of the Amazon burnt and clear felled so that cattle can be ranched to supply cheap burgers. You want to talk about shitty policies of the PRC, fine they were shit, what about the shitty British policies of the C19 during the Irish and three Indian famines? Or the shitty policies of Britain, Russia and the Ottomans during the Persian famine, Or the Biafran famine caused by a military blockade which was backed by both Britain and the USSR! You acknowledge the hits for one system, but you ignore them for the other. Hypocrite. Finally, "statist regimes of the C19," really?? The Russian Revolution was in 1917, that's the C20!!!!!!! @fgsaramago No, that's not true. That's how the US system is designed, it didn't have to be designed like that, people chose to design it that way. It is flawed as it does not give a truly democratic result as on multiple occasions candidates who did not receive the national popular vote became President. That is a flawed system. That is not democratic. Simple.

@fgsaramago No, I'm saying it is perfectly possible to construct a system which allows direct democracy within a federal system. In the US, states could resolve to abolish the electoral college and be represented by whatever the votes are for the candidates for POTUS. There is nothing in a federal structure that requires them to continue with the undemocratic model that currently exists. Any comparison with the EU is ridiculous. The EU is not a federal structure for a start and thus its systems represent national governments coming together.

@fgsaramago No, it was a choice to represent the various states in the way they are. There is nothing intrinsic about a federal system that means you have to do it in an undemocratic way when it comes to electing the head of the federal system, you just need to make a choice not to.

@fgsaramago I don't believe I did say that at all. The state's can accept the democratic thing to do is to be represented by the popular vote (in fact there is a pact, that once adopted by sufficient states, will allocate electoral college seats in proportion to the national vote share, but which will only come into force once sufficient states have adopted said pact) and this does not alter their federal position one iota. They are still being represented, but are choosing to do it in a more democratic way.
