The concept of 'asking the Scots' would have been just an anathema to the political class of Scotland as 'asking the English' would have been to their counterparts south of the border in the C18. Secondly, all countries are political constructs. Or are you going to tell me that Germany or Spain don't exist? Or maybe you'd prefer the political arrangements prior to the later middle ages. We could give the Shetlands, Orkneys and Hebrides back to Norway. Or maybe give Lothian back Northumberland, or we could recreate Reghed by uniting Dumfrieshire and Cumbria. Or perhaps you'd like the return of 'Fotrun/Pictland' and Strathclotta? They are all political constructions just like any other country. Scotland is no different in that regard to England, France, China, Australia or, indeed, Great Britain.
