  1. Ancient "Spaniards" were among the legions who conquered England before it was England. Spaniards pissed on England before the Anglo-Saxons came to kiss the land. :-) LEGIO IX HISPANA was a lost legion, and if that was due to being beaten by Celts, it would be the equivalent of the Brits overwhelmed by Zulus, so Brits shouldn't boast if that were true, as the same sword cuts both ways. The British Empire wasn't the biggest, which is a very popular misconception due to the Black Legend and hypocrisy as I am about to explain. To know who owned most of earth requires taking most of earth, water... into account, and Iberia ruled more waves because during the Iberian Union, Portugal was dominated by Spain because Morocco wrecked the proud Lose-itanian invaders, so the Spanish Emperor after which the Philippines are named had a monopoly over every viable ocean in the universe, with competent rivals limited to the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Persian Gulf - those being the Turks. No other polity at the time was able to defeat the Spanish at sea until said emperor sabotaged the armada by putting an inexperienced man in command, sending the ships without finishing preparations and forbidding flexibility nor rational responses to pirate attacks such as chasing the gnats. Why count a British or Mongol wasteland when a sea has far more resources and profitable trade routes? Only hypocrites move the goalpost from "most of earth" to "most land of earth." HAIL IBERIA!
