Here the context is that his men had already accomplished their mission, so fighting non-Persians was pointless and only for his vanity. This is a good reason for going back to their homes for loved ones. Did the Mongols have a good reason? It seems true that the Mongols left for no good reason. Could have just sent a small group to do diplomacy, but then again, Mongols didn't trust other Mongols with the succession. A small group of representatives could be held hostage, and a prince of the Khan would want all of his men with him, since Mongols aren't known for bravery (Alexander always led his men; Genghis did not. Mongols liked to do hit and run, not stay and fight).
