"let the People do their job" the cops are also a part of the people, in fact ideally they should enforce laws written by the peoples elected representatives, the problem here isn't the catholic church or the cops, the problem is the people who believe in fairy tales(Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and a lot of less popular fairy tales) outnumber those who don't, which is why the main purveyors of fairy tales got away with it in Chile.
