The regular foot soldiers back then, much like today don't really know why they were at war, most union soldiers believed they fought to preserve the union, most confederate soldiers thought they fought for their respective states. The officers in the confederated army however knew exactly what they were fighting for, namely that they were in the main slave owners and that is why they fought. Back then only men with property could vote, how many soldiers do you think owned enough land to have the right to vote, furthermore if you had any debts that excluded you from the vote.

  3. No, that's it not how it works, people are usually afraid of losing what little they have, you have to remember that they were subsistence farmers most of them. To them it's was a matter of defending hearth and home, soldiers before the rise of the nation state fought for this, unless they were mercenaries. So the matter of feeling better than slaves were off course also a part of it, but that was not the main motivation.

Many if not most confederates were illiterate or semi literate, one of the many differences between Union and Confederate soldiers was the degree of literacy and that northern soldiers fought for the nation state(The United States), the Confederates fought for their respective states without any sense of a nation state. The Napoleonic wars was the first time in Europe where people began to feel that they had a stake in fighting for the nation, but only with the rise and unification of Germany, Italy and the American civil war did soldiers truly fight for their nation as an idea. The Confederated states never gained that feeling amongst it troops or populace that could motivate northern boys to leave home and fight in offensive war, a few southerners probably did feel the same, but it was a tiny minority.

  6. After each large battle all the dead, irrespective of which side they fought on were tossed into those mass graves, this was done to prevent pandemics which could decimate the victorious army. You would be pissing on greys and blues uniforms, blacks, whites and browns in skin color. A large ditch would be dug, body parts shot off by cannon, nameless dead, camp followers(sutlers, bawds, pimps, prostitutes and so on), and any dead too poor to be transported back home would be tossed in there.

  19. cmack17 Do you honestly think I'm an apologist for slavery, you are still passing judgement by the standards of today on people of the past, the concept of not being racist or jingoistic in the 1800's is laughable, the enlisted soldiers in both armies were in manner most of us would find abhorrent today. But there is actual evidence as to why soldiers on both sides of the American civil war fought and for the most part southerners fought to defend their homes, the officers however who for the most part owned slaves in significant numbers fought to maintain slavery. Nuance is not too much to ask is it. Yet you think these past events are somehow something that makes people in the present either culpable or that a sizable minority of the electorate still hold similar beliefs to a bunch of antebellum plantation owners?

  20. cmack17 It's far simpler today, there are two horrible options. Neither option was outright racist. Both options are proponents of war and exploitation. The option was between anti Russian jingoism or anti Muslim jingoism. The majority of the populace rejected both by not voting at all. Both used the politics of division and fear to garner support. The civil war began in 1860, in 1863 the volunteers of both armies were about to be reenlisted, both sides engaged in propaganda, prior to that point the north was not fighting to end slavery. It is worth noting that the confederates throughout the civil war had far more deserters, there is probably a reason for this. Perhaps you could answer this conundrum.

We were discussing the motivations of enlisted soldiers in the Confederate army, according to historical testimony they were fighting for their separate states, the officers were fighting for the right to own slaves. It is allways easy in hindsight to pretend that you or I would not be the proverbial "good German". You were the one to bring up the present day.

  27. I Piss On Confederate Graves Letters show that the majority who sent word to their family and friends were concerned mostly about the defense of their home state, fighting for slavery is rarely mentioned. Many of these letters were written by whomever in their unit who was literate.
