There is an ancient statue from Anatolia that depicts somebody who would rather die than be a slave, it's called the Galatian Suicide, the statue was commisoned by the King of Pergamon who was amazed that the Gauls would rather die than surrender and be enslaved, the statue depicts the moment in which a Gaul plunged his own sword into his heart from the neck. Some people are free and will not accept any chains, physical or mental, the Gauls who choose death were described by the Greeks as the bravest humans they had ever faced because being a slave was unacceptable to them.
