Check other comments below for correction Well one of the reasons why imaginary numbers were such a leap is because i = sqrt(-1) is wrong. sqrt(-1)^2 = -1 while sqrt(-1)*sqrt(-1) = sqrt(-1 * -1) = sqrt(1) = 1 imaginary numbers only work when you say i^2 = -1 and leave it at that. Even though algebraically it follows that i = sqrt(-1). Mathemattically imaginary numbers didn't make much sense at the time, but they turned out to be extremely useful in more practial fields, which is why we now use them.
